CREATIVE CLASSROOM SERVICES has created a structured plan based on scientific research, underpinned with assessments based on foundational skills and strategic phonemic centers, to provide a clear pathway for literacy improvement.

The release of NYSED “Big 6” SKILLS and the NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS LITERACY COLLABORATIVE DIVISION OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION in partnership with NYC READS further supported that our plan was on the right pathway.  Our unique strategic plan was designed to strengthen the recommendations of the Science of Reading through embedding phonics and phonemic instruction into every K-2 classroom.  The initiative  is aimed to raise awareness and establish a shared base of reasoning though developing an understanding of the intricacies of woven literacy strands epitomized in Scarborough’s Reading Rope.   This model assists teachers understanding that Word Recognition and Language Comprehension, each comprised of several small strands, are woven together to become a rope that represents complete skilled reading.

We are proud to have developed our

2024/25 NYSED & NYCDOE LITERACY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT PLAN- GRADES K-2

and share it with your school as your embed your Structured Literacy plan.

Through a sequenced series of support, schools have the opportunity to build a foundational base that ensures teachers knowledge, understanding  and practices are aligned with expected science of reading applications outline by NYSED and NYCDOE.

This  plan includes professional learning experiences and classroom support for K-2 staff in:

2. Oral Language

THE SCIENCE AND LOVE OF READING

We still need our libraries!

The goal of science-based reading instruction is for students to be able to read any book of their interest. Research is clear that unless students are explicitly taught foundational skills and have plentiful opportunities to build background knowledge and vocabulary, they will not have access to a wide variety of texts and will therefore be unable to discover joy, wonder or solace in books. Ultimately, the Science of Reading is inextricably linked to the love of reading. Schools and classrooms should also maintain robust libraries and library systems, find space and time for student choice, celebrate students' reading and writing accomplishments, and partner with families on reading routines that can be implemented at home.
